History of Alaior

Alaior es uno de los municipios más antiguos de Menorca, fundado oficialmente en 1304 por orden del rey Jaime II de Mallorca. El nombre de Alaior proviene del latín "Aleo", que significa "corral o cierra para ganado". Alaior prosperó durante la época medieval gracias a la agricultura y la ganadería, actividades que todavía hoy son fundamentales para su economía. El centro histórico de Alaior está caracterizado por calles estrechas y sinuosas, casas encaladas y edificios emblemáticos como la iglesia de Santa Eulalia, construida en el siglo XVII.

The name Alaior comes from the Latin "Aleo," meaning "corral or enclosure for cattle." Alaior thrived during the medieval period due to agriculture and livestock farming, activities that remain central to its economy today. The historic center of Alaior is characterized by narrow, winding streets, whitewashed houses, and notable buildings such as the Church of Santa Eulalia, constructed in the 17th century.

Leisure

Beaches

Alaior does not have its own beaches, but it is well-positioned for access to some of the best beaches in Menorca:

  • Son Bou: This is the longest beach in Menorca, with over 2.5 km of fine sand and crystal-clear waters. It is ideal for families and offers a wide range of services.
  • Cala en Porter: Another popular beach with a sheltered bay, perfect for swimming and relaxing. It has amenities such as restaurants, bars, and sunbed rentals.
  • Cales Coves: A unique cove with numerous prehistoric caves carved into the cliffs. It is an ideal spot for snorkeling and exploring caves.
