History of Es Mercadal

Es Mercadal is one of the most central municipalities in Menorca, located at the foot of Monte Toro, the island's highest mountain. The name "Es Mercadal" comes from the word "market," as it historically was an important trade center. The town developed from the 13th century after the Christian conquest of Menorca. Monte Toro, with its sanctuary, has been a place of pilgrimage and devotion since medieval times. Es Mercadal has preserved its traditional charm, with cobblestone streets and white houses.

The most important festival in Es Mercadal is the Fiestas de Sant Martí, held in mid-July. During these festivities, Menorcan horses take center stage with the famous jaleos, along with music, dances, and fireworks. Es Mercadal is also known for its artisan traditions, especially in cheese-making, leather goods, and ceramics.
